Psalm Reflection: The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (Cycle C)

“Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.” - Psalm 122

If you had one week to live, would you change anything about your life? Your attitude? Your priorities? How you spend your time differently?

Odds are that most of us would not keep things the same, because we lose focus on what’s important too easily and we would not feel ready. Facing our mortality puts things into perspective. However, the goal for us as Christians should be to always be putting things into perspective. We should always have our mind on things from above, but that is so much easier said than done.

How can we possibly have that eternal awareness and still do all the earthly things that are expected of us? I think it happens in small ways rather than big incredible gestures. We should always be prepared for the last words we say to someone to possibly be our last to them. We should never leave broken relationships unreconciled. We should try to let go of wrongs done to us and practice forgiveness. We should be faithful to the relationships and responsibilities God has called us to and not get distracted by trivial worries or unimportant tasks. We should be fully present to the person in front of us. We should put our phone down and turn our screens off more often.

We simply need to ask ourselves the question: if I were gone tomorrow, what would I wish I had done differently? Then go and do it. There is no time to waste, because we really don’t know what the future holds. Savor every moment and squeeze every drop of value out of each day, so that nothing is left unsaid, undone, unforgiven, unthanked, or unappreciated.

This week, express your heartfelt gratitude and love to someone who deserves it, but that you haven’t told in a while. We are praying for you this week.

See you in the Eucharist.
