Psalm Reflection: Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C)
“I will sing of your salvation.” - Psalm 71
Why are you Christian? Why do you believe in Jesus? Take a moment and really think about it.
Is it because you had an experience of God at an event or a retreat and you felt that He was real or you knew His love for the first time? Is it because it brings you joy or makes you feel good? Maybe because your family believes and you are simply used to it or it has become part of the routine? Or is it because your friends believe and you want to be in community with them? What is the reason?
None of those reasons are bad in and of themselves, but they cannot be THE reason why we believe in Jesus. We believe in Jesus because through Him we can attain SALVATION. As it says in Romans, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Even though relationships, experiences, traditions, and feelings are good things, they will not save us from our sins. The truth is that we owed a debt we could not pay, so Jesus paid a debt he did not owe. The ultimate goal of life is salvation (1 Peter 1:9) and it is only possible in and through Jesus Christ. If that does not propel us into deeper love and relationship with God in recognition of our deep need for Him, then we need to reassess why we turn to Jesus in the first place. This week, let the first words out of your mouth be “Jesus” every morning to offer the day to Him and to remember your need for Him in every moment. We are praying for you this week!
See you in the Eucharist.
