Psalm Reflection: Ascension Sunday (Cycle B)
“God reigns over the nations, God sits upon his holy throne.” - Psalm 47:9
⠀⠀
Do you get hyped up about politics? Do you watch the news and feel overwhelmed with a sense of despair? As a country that becomes more and more secular each day, we have lost a clear desire for a Savior, and so we look to the powers of this world to satisfy and save us. Presidential candidates are brought under such scrutiny as if we expect them to conform to exactly what we want and to be perfect. Laws and propositions are constantly battled over by two sides who have different ideas of what a perfect world looks like. No world leader, no law, no country can save you and satisfy all the desires of your heart, only Jesus can. This doesn’t mean we should be disconnected from advocating for human rights and social justice issues, but we cannot place expectations only Christ can fulfill on others. When things get overwhelming in the world or in your own relationships, instead of despairing simply recognize that these are reminders for us to turn to the only one who can bring us to perfection: Jesus Christ. We can do nothing without Him, so let’s stop pretending the opposite is true. We are praying for you.
See you in the Eucharist!
