Psalm Reflection: The Sixth Sunday of Easter

“Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth; break into song; sing praise.” -Psalm 98:4

How much do you whine, criticize or complain in a given day? We live in a very negative culture. I remember a number of years ago, a news station decided they would only report positive stories. A few weeks later their ratings dropped so low they were in danger of shutting down. Why does it seem so much easier to be drawn to the negative instead of highlighting the good, the true and the beautiful? It’s easy to go to Mass and complain about the music, the Homily, the way the lector misspoke, and numerous other things. Gratitude is hard and takes real sincere effort. It is difficult because it reminds us that our achievements are not our own, that everything comes from God and that we can claim ownership over nothing but our sin. Having a heart of gratitude takes effort every single day. This week, journal, reflect upon, or pray about the many things God has given you in life, and next time you are in Mass, focus on the gift you are receiving, instead of all the things you wish were different. We are praying for you.

See you in the Eucharist!
