Psalm Reflection: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity (Cycle B)

“Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.” - Psalm 33

Desmond Tutu once said, “You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them.”

I did not choose my parents or my sister. I did not even choose my own children. Yes, I chose to have children, but I had no control or ability to predict and choose how they would turn out or who they will become.

God is our Father and we are His children, which is wild on its own. What is also wild, is that God actually CHOSE us to be His children and to be our Father. He created us each EXACTLY as we are, chose to die for our sins, and chooses to love us as we are, even in our sin.

You were not an accident or happenstance of history. You were an intentional forethought of God. You are the result of an intentional, love-soaked act of creation. You are chosen by God:

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you.” - Jeremiah 1:5

“It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.” - John 15:16

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of his will, for the praise of the glory of his grace that he granted us in the beloved.” - Ephesians 1:3-6

You are not an accident.

You are not a mistake.

You are not junk.

You are valued.

You are worthy.

You are loved in a specific, unique and unrepeatable way.

You are chosen.

I may not have chosen my family, but I did choose my wife. Our spousal union and relationship is a sliver, a small foreshadowing and example of the relationship God calls each one of us to with Him. He stand at the altar every day in the Eucharist waiting to remind us that He is will always choose us. We simply need to approach the altar with faith, trust and love to choose Him in return.

Reflect on the words of scripture above this week and allow the words to convict you, challenge you and inspire reflection. God has chosen you, but for what? As you make decisions each day, consider what He chose you for and if you are living it out or not. When someone is chosen for an important position, they often have a change of title or even an insignia or badge they wear. You bear the insignia of the heart of God, you carry Him wherever you go. Our lives should look different as a result. Does yours?

I am praying for you, please pray for me, and I will see you in the Eucharist.

Matt.
