Psalm Reflection: Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B)
“Magnify the Lord with me; and let us exalt His name together.” - Psalm 34:4
When people look at your life, what do you think they see? Do they see someone who is obsessed with work?Someone concerned with what other people think of them? Someone who is attached to their phone? Someone who simply mimics what others around them are doing? Do they see someone who is joyful? Do they see someone who is a Christian and glorifies God in what they do? To “magnify” means “to glorify something or someone.” In the world of Instagram and Snapchat, it is easy to become obsessed with making our lives look polished and filtered under the magnifying glass of our peers, but life is about more than glorifying ourselves. Why do we obsess about what other people think and how they view us? Will that really make us happy in the long run? I think that eventually if we merely obsess over what our lives appear to be, we will miss out of opportunities for substantial growth and change. We will eventually realize that, while we wanted to appear great, everyone else was busy actually doing great things. We will realize we wasted our time worrying about how we appeared that we didn’t really live. This week, be intentional about your day, who you are with and what you are doing. Think about where you want to be in five years and start thinking about the steps you need to take to get there. And this week, don’t post anything you are doing on social media, live in the moment because God is seeking to encounter you in it. We are praying for you this week!
See you in the Eucharist!
