Psalm Reflection: Palm Sunday
“My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” - Psalm 22
Do these words sound familiar? Jesus utters these words on the cross, and if we are unfamiliar with the Psalms it can easily sound to us like Jesus is doubting God in His darkest and most painful final moments on the cross. However, to any Jewish person sharing Jesus on the cross, they would have recognized that He was quoting the Psalms. Psalm 22 begins with this line, but ends with declarations to give glory to God and that all generations will serve Him.
In moments where we feel like God has forgotten us or abandoned us in darkness, we can return to this Psalm to remind us that God is still present and will always make His glory known. God will never abandon you. If He forgot about you for even a millisecond, you would cease to exist. That means that God is ALWAYS thinking about you. Your name is ALWAYS on his lips. As we look toward Easter, let us remember in the midst of the dark moments we recall during Holy Week, that there is always hope in the midst of darkness. This week, read Psalm 22 and offer up all of your worries, knowing that God will resurrect even the smallest of sufferings. We are praying for you this week!
See you in the Eucharist.
