Psalm Reflection: Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B)
βThe Lord is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed.β - Psalm 34:19
This has been a difficult week in the Catholic Church. Maybe you, like me, have been brokenhearted at the atrocious and evil acts committed by those who represent the faith that I hold so dearly. Yes, our church may be made up of sinners, but this is simply unacceptable. In moments of deep hurt and brokenness, what do we do? What has consoled me is to remember the crucifixion. In that heinous act, it appeared as though hope and love itself died. And yet, it is the symbol of our faith because we know the rest of the story. There is no suffering without redemption, and no death without resurrection for those of us who have faith. Beyond this brokenness our Church is experiencing right now, what brokenness do you experience in your own heart? What have you held onto that had been difficult to reconcile, forgive or have hope in? I invite you this week to pray before a crucifix, and simply offer that brokenness and hurt you are carrying to God who understands pain, hurt, brokenness and betrayal. Know that hope and redemption are always on the horizon. We are praying for you.
See you in the Eucharist!
