Psalm Reflection: Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B)

“Teach us to count our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.” - Psalm 90:12

St. Teresa of Calcutta once said, “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.” That last part is what I find most interesting. We are always told to live in the moment, that you can’t change the past, and that the future is made today. “Let us begin,” however, implies that there is work to do, a choice to make every day to participate in life or watch it go by. I try to live every day as if I were on my death bed: not to be morbid, but to be aware of the choices I make every day and how I spend my time. I know that when I get to the end of my life, I am not going to wish I had more followers, that I had posted better pictures, made more money, binge-watched more shows, or checked more things off of my to-do list. I am going to wish I spent more time in intentional conversations and authentic relationships with the people closest to me. I am going to wish I put my phone down and had a conversation with the person in front of me. I am going to wish I had been more grateful, more positive, more hopeful, more passionate, and more determined to do the things I love. I am going to wish I told more people about Jesus. What do you think you will wish you had done differently? Who will you wish you had spent more time or reconciled with? God exists outside of time; time didn’t exist until He made it, and everything He makes has a purpose. So what is the purpose of time? What is the purpose of YOUR time? This week, make a list of everything you do in a given day, and then cross off everything you would not do if you knew it was your last day alive on earth. Let God put things in perspective for you this week. We are praying for you.

See you in the Eucharist.
